What is Montessori?
Montessori in guidance with the National Curriculum
Maths
This is taught through the use of specialised equipment, which allows manipulation of concrete materials, this prepares the child for later work with abstract calculations.
Maths is also taught through Baking, to allow the child to understand concepts of volume and weight etc.
Physical
The children have access to an outdoor area in which they can run, climb, skip and play ball games etc. We also implement music and movement within the setting were children are free to join in the actions to songs and rhymes.
Creative
Children are encouraged to enjoy a range of creative activities as well as gain a knowledge of the fine arts.
Knowledge and understanding of the world
The children study a cross curricular approach in reference to the cultures in each continent. They will study aspects of Geography, History, Biology, Botany and Art.
Personal, social and emotional
This is part of our practical life, where children will learn to participate in everyday activities, learning social skills, independence, concentration, care of others and of the environment.
Language, literacy and communication
The language materials are based on phonetics to develop reading, writing, spelling and grammar. The Montessori environment is full of oral language opportunities.
We provide a wide range of books to encourage and promote literacy skills within the setting. Children are constantly encouraged to socialise, to promote levels of communication by use of grace and courtesy.
